This may not answer your question very well, but I think the military should improve the moral standards that it holds it’s members to. I think our Marines are probably the best people we have in this country because they are willing to give everything for their country, willing to kill (not a pleasant thing) for their country, willing to die for their country, but at the same time the off duty activities of marines can involve lude things such as strip clubs. If a moral code was at least strongly advocated (their freedom’s shouldn’t be limited, but a general direction should be given) the Marines’ efficiency would improve and the possibility of unsavory events such as those that took place at Abu Ghraib would be minimized.
Although I simply said Marines you could substitute service members in there if you like

Miyamoto Musashi a legendary warrior and swordsman of the 17th century said in his Book of Five Rings, “Respect your enemies, otherwise your victory means nothing.” He meant that if you degrade others, you degrade yourself. To answer your question, I would say the military could have treated the prisoners of war (which is what they were since the US invaded) like human beings. In so doing they could have shown the Iraqis that they really were the ‘good guys’. The US was relatively kind to the Japanese prisoners of war so many went back to their homes after the war with a favorable impression of the Americans. In Iraq, on the other hand, the brutality and humiliation suffered by these prisoners sowed the seeds of more violence. As you can see, five years later, Iraq still knows no peace.
Best to follow the golden rule, regardless of where we are or what the situation is. When we humiliate others, it usually comes back to haunt us. It’s called Karma.

The obvious thing, as a former G.I., is in the mistake we made in military leadership.
The military allowed the command of the prison to be placed in the hands of a woman.

Yes..they could have just killed them where they found them.It would have been a lot cheaper.
Had I been calling the shots, there would be no prisoners, only dead terrorists.
