Twitter. What is it and Why Has it Captured So Much Attention?

Unless you have been under a cave for the last six months you have at one point or another heard the name Twitter. Oprah Winfrey is raving about Twitter, Ellen DeGeneres  is tweeting and Ashton Kutcher just beat CNN to 1 million followers! But what exactly is twitter and why does it have everyone so captivated?

Twitter, for those of you that do not fully understand what it is as of yet is a social networking site where people can post short updates, limited to 140 characters, on everything and anything that they choose. It is often compared to status updates on Facebook and MySpace because the updates are so short. These small updates are called tweets and would be categorized as micro-blogging.

One of the greatest benefits of Twitter is the fact that the updates which people post are short and sweet, therefore in this day and age where people are constantly on the move; you can keep in touch quickly and easily with a group of like minded people.  You can use Twitter to socialize with friends or family or you can use twitter to help your business grow both online and offline.

Because many celebrities that are now using twitter, from Oprah Winfrey, to Ashton Kutcher , Demi Moore and Brittany Spears – if you are a big fan you can follow along with them and see what they are doing with their day.  Even President Barrack Obama sends out tweets as do many other political figures.
